This may not be helpful to you, but the Boris Red plugin has this capability. And Boris isn't too expensive! I use it, for the most part, for any sophisticated text animation and that is about it. But the plugin has come in quite handy!
I'm not sure whether Smoke can do this. I know the Flame can.
