That is some kind of approximation, but the choice is the right one if
you want to recive lots and lots of mails, like before.

You will need to make a Google ID, which can be your e-mail and a
password.
If you like, you can have everything sent as an e-mail, so it will
work exactly like this group, or you can view it on the web.
If we could get some people to give it a test run for a few days, that
will help determine if this is a viable replacement.
