Alas my=20
friend.<BR></FONT><BR></DIV>
<DIV></DIV><SPAN class=3Dgmail_quote></SPAN>From my personal e-mail =
address...=20
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>I was fortunate. After a weird, substance-laden period in my life =
as a=20
Front of House Engineer for several rock and punk acts in the mid-90s, I =

realized I needed a change. You think ad execs are crazy and =
unpredictable? Try=20
the average guitar tech for a punk band. Takes unpredictable to an =
entirely new=20
level. So my change led me back to my hometown -- Huntsville, Alabama -- =
and=20
working for Intergraph Corporation in their beautiful in-house corporate =
media=20
facility. Intergraph made serious serious bucks in the 80s and spent =
several=20
million of it on a state-of-the-art in-house studio. At one time, we had =
the=20
largest bluescreen and floating stage in the southeast. When it was =
first built,=20
it was the kind of place that popped eyes. Especially in Huntsville, =
Alabama. :)=20
</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Sometime after a few years there, Intergraph's hardware group got =
involved=20
in video I/O and&nbsp;launched the first WinNT system to puncture SGI =
dominance=20
in that world. It was a good time. And around then, the relationship =
with=20
Softimage was born and to make a&nbsp;very long story short -- the =
Intergraph=20
TDZ-400 became the first shipping, purchasable&nbsp;hardware system for =
DS. I=20
worked down the hall from the engineers designing, building, and testing =
the=20
StudioZ cards. I was one of the first people in the world to do =
production on=20
the TDZ-based DS. </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>When I first saw DS -- I thought.. holy sh**! This is the product I =
need. I=20
was so tired of doing the Media Composer/Photoshop/After Effects loop =
and=20
managing all the versions and other crap you have to manage with that =
workflow.=20
So there was born my initial passion and love for DS. And besides... =
I&nbsp;had=20
the&nbsp;same gap in my teeth that Daniel did. It was karma.&nbsp;And DS =
and=20
Softimage (and later Avid) were very very good to me. DS took me many =
cool=20
places and I worked on a ton of cool projects. </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>And in that time, the DS forum was born. At first, we were a pretty =
ragtag=20
bunch. I remember Scott Witthaus's first setup... dangerously close to=20
collapsing at all times, and wildly cutting edge at the time. We all =
stared in=20
awe at&nbsp;realtime uncompressed NTSC dissolves. That was some hot=20
stuff.&nbsp;The early passion was&nbsp;shared by all the users and the =
Softimage=20
crew --&nbsp;Michel, Sylvain, Pascale (yeow!,) Lynn, Phillipe, Janick, =
Wojtek,=20
Dominic, Sheasby, Stojda, and all the devs who never posted but were =
always=20
there.... we were all truly "on a mission from Gawd."&nbsp; (we'll =
ignore=20
Taliesn Jones and Sam Small) I've done professional demos for a long =
time, and I=20
still feel reverential awe when I think of how Dean and Tony would hold =
early=20
demos together with cheeks puckered hoping to hell that nothing exploded =
--=20
because when DSv1 exploded, it did so fairly dramatically. </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>I have made good lifelong friends via this list. When my wife and I =
had our=20
first child, the e-mails and warmth both on- and off-list from my =
friends on the=20
forum brought&nbsp;joy to our lives. I&nbsp;always thought it was =
amazing that=20
this new life&nbsp;had people all over the world who were aware of her=20
introduction and wished her Godspeed. The list was always a community =
first and=20
a "product list" second. </DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Even after I left the DS fold, I couldn't bring myself to =
unsubscribe. The=20
people and spirit here was something special. For those of you that have =
been=20
active on the list since I "left" -- I have vicariously enjoyed your =
posts and=20
spirit and felt somehow a part of it. What Avid has or hasn't done with =
DS is a=20
discussion for boardrooms and barrooms. But the closing of this list is =
a=20
closing of a chapter in my life. Is that weird? Maybe... but it's how I =
feel.=20
I'm sure the list will continue at Google or Yahoo or wherever... but it =
won't=20
be <A onclick=3D"return top.js.OpenExtLink(window,event,this)"=20
href=3D"mailto:DS(at)softimage.com" target=3D_blank>DS(at)softimage.com</A>. =
Softimage.=20
DS.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>So to all of you on the list who know me and who don't know me...=20
Godspeed...</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Signing off...</DIV><SPAN class=3Dsg>
