I came arcoss this issue also when having weighted clusters on an enveloped character.
You can get around it (partly) by parenting the null to the object it's weighted to...or was it the other way around. Either way though you are limited to using only one weighted cluster center.
I asked around for ages about this problem on xsibase, Jordi actually got back to me on it and explain the whole thing in detail. He said he might mention the problem to the Soft guys in the hope that it might be fixed in the future.
Here's hoping ver 4 has resolved the issue.

Simply nest all the objects under a common Null or Implicit obj (including the cluster center nulls), and Xform the Null parent while in branch selection mode.

try puting a model node ontop of it, and translate it.. I am almost sure it should work :)
