Just wondering if there is any full 3d movies done completely in
Maya(off the shelves with little to no custom plug-ins)?

As of XSI I know there are Pinocchio 3000 and Magic Round about.

Thanks

I think you should be in the position of trying to hire technical staff
for
your team before calling the shots in this discussion.

Anybody who did knows how ATROCIOUSLY HARD it is to find people with
solid
foundations and technical experience that also use XSI and know how to
implement it in pipelines.

When you build or revisit a pipe on Maya or HDN you can always find the
odd
freelances who come from weta, R&H, ILM, D2, Tip, Orphanage, ESCape etc.
who
come and bring fresh ideas and tested experience into the game.
Building an XSI pipeline though is a completely different ballgame, try
and
ask the few film shops with more then 20 licenses like us, AL, Omation,
SW,
ILM on the production where they used XSI (which are quite a few) etc.
how
enormously fun it can be to look for SENIOR technical staff...

Over the last year and a half I've had to pull off RIDICULOUS hours, NOT
because my boss is cheap and doesn't want to hire more people
(matteroffactly everytime I supported somebody I got him in my team),
but
because I've had to do character TDing, Pipeline engineering, R&D and
Technical supervision for 2 creatures all at the same time.

Everytime a maya or HDN based team in here needed more technical people
they
would get somebody from another major studio who would land running,
everytime I was overworked and short on technical people... I had to
bump up
my schedule and red bull intake, or cope with people fresh out of school
or
with only a couple of commercials under their belt and no film
experience
whatsoever.

As much as I like being head hunted as a TD and the whole "big fish in a
small pond" situation, I'd rather take a step back on the ladder and see
more experienced technical staff being formed by other companies that
can
come in and help me out.

I'm sorry Bernard, but to other large studios what ILM and other
companies
do IS important.
The hype and the prestige of having ILM in the customer base? I don't
care.
But saying that the current studios use of XSI is irrelevant and you
should
only look at what you like means you live in a sealed fishbowl.

P.S.
I still love the SW, and I don't plan to work on anything but XSI, HDN
and
Shake for as long as I can. I've used other SWs to produce shots
(including
maya) and I know what I like, but burying your head in the sand
everytime
somebody is a bit alarmed about the quality of the userbase is not the
way
out.

I think you should care about what you like rather than what the others
like. Unless they pay you.
