Most of the time these days I start with something I know is right for the quality - usually 1,2, threshold 0.1 - and just let it go unless the frame time starts to go through the roof. At that point there's a number of things you head straight for, more often than not BSP. The rest of it is just being sensible about what you aim for and what settings on the things in the scene that are potential killers. Which prompts me to say, remember, it's not just render settings that make for expensive frames.

I don't think you need to wade through the full set of pages every time; once or twice to get the basics is probably enough but I do think you should get at least a loose understanding of how rendering works at this level. It's not really that hard.

I know optimizing MR is highly related to the scene properties. I do however
think that there could be some more intuitive ways (without reading the 30 page Cookbook
that came out for XSI 1.5 each time) of helping users to analyze and optimize the MR settings, maybe based on somekind of wizard setup that lets you fill in the info that you know about your scene and then having the wizard give you some qualified guesses? If you give enough info on what your scene looks like it might be able to at least give u a hint on what settings should be punched up our down and with what increments to fine tune? I find it quite tedious doing all this manually at the moment. I guess if you sit with this kind of stuff everyday you get a hang of it but for me who uses it sporadically it´s damn hard to get fast optimized MR settings.

What's this got to do with XSI anyway?
That text just looks like vague promotional jargon.

You can't build optimised presets for mental ray rendering without knowing something about the scene you're rendering. This applies to both quality and speed. Looks like a waste of time to me.

Someone care to comment?

*/mR_pRime/* is a script for */Autodesk 3dsmax 7 and 7.5
/*containing preset render settings for the included mental ray
renderer. Each preset have been carefully optimized for both speed
and quality, resulting in easy and quick view of your renders.
