Yes, that's what I do.

Actually, I've just messed and I have a better workaround. Switch to the
pass with no overrides, select the object and open a rendertree. Lock the
rendertree now switch back to the pass with the overrides. Edit nodes in
this view and you won't get locked parameters. I'm guessing the same would
work in any other material ppg.
