You may consider using a puzzle matte. This is a pass where objects
have a different solid color, generally red, green and blue. Then in
the comp soft you can pick what channel to use at the matte. The
advantage of doing this is that you can combine many mattes in a
single image, and you don't run into the risk of eating alpha channel
pixels around the matted objects.
