select the bsp settings of the cloud (in the ppg particle renderer)
the default ones are no good in my experience. they slow down rendering
tremendously.
try something like:
BSP max depth to 15; max size to 250
i've rendered over 150.000 particles with sprites with acceptable speed, say
less than 2 minutes for pal frames
and avoid selfshadowing particles like the plague.
if you have shadows, turning them off should make a huge difference.
you can also turn the selfshadowing slider in the billboard properties to 0
