facial controls VS shape anim (WAS RE: Dont wanna be forced to maya *cry*)

Hi!
Sorry for hijacking the thread. (very nice real Brad!)

Ok, when people make facial control that are that complex...do they also
make lip-sync shapes or they just go about making every lip-syncing with
these controls and animate away the dialog?

I think I read somewhere that Pixar doesn't make lip-sync shapes the
animators would just use the controls as they go along.

I guess it also depends on how fast you need to animate and how much the
character is going to be used...

If you have any toughts on the subject feel free to speak up!
