Hello all,
Wow a lot of posts to wake up to this morning! Yikes!
I think the biggest mistake all the 3D apps companies did was drop the
prices to almost nothing. I think it's a shame for them, and for people
working in this field, that they had to keep undercutting the costs to the
point there the basic versions are almost given away.
What I'd like to have seen is XSI Adv and Ess stay at their high price, and
then have a basic version created for hobbyists, etc, which would basically
be FND as we know it today. The costs for these packages being higher would
mean pricing for jobs would still be higher, etc.
The cost for a basic non commercial version would be then the cost of FND.
It's such a shame that these companies couldn't work something out to keep
the value in their amazing soft wares.
At the end of the day if you're just using xsi to mess around you're going
to either pirate it or pay a price you feel is fair. It's in softimage's
interests to make sure these people pay I would have thought.
What we have now is XSI Fnd for $400! A package you can quite easily do 80%
of all pro jobs on. I've always thought this is crazy! And I'm still amazed
that the 3D companies, like Softimage, can keep on going with this.
The other thing this low price brings is hobbyists. People who just play
around with the app, do the odd 10sec club clip, etc. Now I know a lot of
you out there would like to see this list free from all these people but to
be fair to them it's softimage, maya, and the like that have put these
amazing apps in their hands for next to nothing, so we have to deal with it.
Personally I think the upgrade cost works out like this.. If you're using
xsi to make money - WOW!!! GET IN!!! Amazing offer.
If you're a hobbyist you probably don't need the extra tools 5 offers for a
while. Carry on playing with 4.2 ESS, which is an amazing app in its own
right anyhow.
Regards,
Simon.
