Someone posted a cool link and according to that a AMD X2 4800 is about
as fast as far as a workstation goes as a dual dual-core opteron system
for twice the price.

Of course, once you have the process using the '4' opterons..... the X2
is no match. But none of the tested apps used more than two processors
under any circumstance. So they had nothing to test regarding a quad
processor setup.
But the test also revealed compatibility problems with two top contender
mainboards and a few apps like photoshop. They didn't find a reason for
that and closed with the advice that you shall try before you buy!
Two X2 4800 each in it's own box will beat the single dual core Opteron.
The Opteron is the big brother of the X2 but the X2 mainboards use
(according to the article) more of an agressive memory and chipset
timing than the server oriented opteron mainboards. However, you have to
manage two boxes and the rendring among them.
I changed my mind from a dual dual-core opteron box due to that article
and invest in two boxes with an X2 each.....
