I can really recommend PointOvenPro.
Transfering objects and animation between the major packages is so easy with it. You can transfer between messiah:studio, Lightwave, Maya, XSI and Max. The precission of the camera matching between apps is documented in one of the videos on the www.ef9.com site and is really amazing.
I use it since it's first release and beside my own rock solid experiences in production, I heard nothing but good things.
While it was first created as a more flexible and stable way to connect Lightwave and messiah, in the latest version 1.4 its XSI part has become very huge, powerful and the native LWO support is simply a godsend since it is quite a good object format.
And if anything goes wrong, I found Mark Wilsons support very fast and to the point.

There also is a PointOven mailinglist if you are interested in other users comments or help:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PointOven/

With the split of work you are planing, it should be working nicely.

Cheers,

Thomas Helzle

What about point oven? I'm not sure how well it works with Maya, but getting
characters between XSI and lightwave was a breeze.

You can forget rigging, unless you know something I don't. ;-)

You should be able to get your animated character into XSI, but to rig
in Maya and animate in XSI is going to be close to impossible.
