Passes are not completely out of the question where cluster materials are
concerned. I did some messing around with this a while back and it can be
done but there are limitations. I'm hazy on the details right now but from
what I remember, you can overide properties on a cluster material if the
object material has an identical parameter on it. Basically, you override
the object material parameter and it ripples down to the cluster. Like I
said, not perfect but better than none at all.
