This is now possible in XSI 5 through self installing plugins, which has some pretty radical implementations on GUI design for us scripting types. You can have a PPG with synoptic powers synched up with sliders and other standard XSI widgets. 

I'm pretty stoked about this. The only problem is, it's not been added to the SDK docs. It would be great if we could get a sample workflow up on the wiki.

Thanks to the Special Projects team for demoing this at the LA user group meeting!
