Hey Bernard, I'll check out the thread, thank you. I've been out of the loop
for a while. As for Houdini, I really did not have time to learn it so I
can't speak about it. It's probably a great package. The trick with my
suggestion is not to copy Houdini's workflow, but to copy the ideas from
Houdini and implement them in an artist friendly way. It is by no means an
easy task. Personally, I do not think we will get anything like that for a
while, if ever, in XSI.
The real trick here is to make such editor powerful, yet not overwhelming,
flexible, yet consistent and compatible with the current workflow. It would
be a real challenge from a GUI and workflow perspective. Nevertheless it
would open many doors, which currently remain closed. It would be a next
step to procedural animation. Another problem that it would address is
unifying the GUI, currently we have the schematic, RT, new particle editor
in next version?, Bahaviour nodes, SCOP editor, script editor, expression
editor etc. all of them remaining isolated.
The challenge with such unified editor is NOT to make it as Houdini (I have
yet to see an animator who loves to work in Houdini). I don't think SI will
ever take that approach though. Looking at the past releases it seems like
editor for a task is a preferred approach. It's not bad, shape manager is
really a simple idea yet it makes life so much easier.
