out of my head (sorry in case of mistakes)

select object
get property > color at vertices
shift-W to go in vertex painting mode

ctrl-W to get the ppg to choose colors and such
you can select in the objects material which vertex color to display if you
have several
you can select in the display settings to display the alpha or the rgb or no
vertexcolors.

it s a bit scattered all over the place isnt it?
