To get a model into XSI from Vue a while ago (it was 4 then) we did the
following.
Export as Lightwave
Read into Lightwave as a scene not an object
Save out as Lightwave 5.6
Import into Deep Exploration and export as dotXsi file
Bit round the houses but did work, perhaps after getting the Lightwave scene
you could use Point Oven now?

it didn't do what I wanted it to anyway. I'm using Vue, from e-on software,
to generate landscapes and I'm moving the landscapes from Vue back into xsi
using obj but having problems with the transforms screwing. I was hoping
exporting as a max scene from Vue would work but the transforms are still
screwed. I'm veering OT here but I don't suppose anyone's had any success
with this and Vue?

Na, just download the trial. You'll get 30 days to work your piping magic. I
recommend fbx btw and bake the animation. Max has (not sure about v8 tho) a
bug with euler rotation so set it to tcb or linear THEN bake.

If you need a license just to import export you might me able to get away
with using 3d Studio Viz, (the arch viz version).
Its a lot cheaper and should be able to use the .xsi to max plugin

I think you will need a seat of Max. My experience with going from Max to
XSI is that you have to have the .xsi plugin for max which requires you to
export out of max.....pretty lame. Autodesk (Discreet) has always had a
stick up their butt when it comes to sharing their file formats so other
apps can import Max stuff.
