I saw the Max to XSI thread and it brought to mind my recent experiences porting from XSI to MAX. Maybe this can help someone.
I have been exporting characters modeled in XSI into MAX for animating. I have been exporting to OBJ file format from XSI, as this seems to be the least error prone option for me.

In MAX however, the normals of the model are always frigged-up upon import. So, this is what I do (I can only theorize why it works, so I won't bother to try to explain it):

1. select all the model's vertices
2. go to the "Weld" area of the modifier tab and drag the area spinner until it is really high.
3. Weld the vertices! Woo! scary.
4. undo/ctrl z

This has always fixed my normals ie, no more wierd black shady things, and the smoothing groups work properly.
Never tried it on a complex scene.
