First, about the picking tolerance. The tool prefers points first,
followed by edges and finally polygons so if a polygon is small the tool
with prefer the points/edges over the polygon itself. However, this is
easy to fix.
1) You can adjust the point tolerance under "Preferences -> Tools ->
Transform -> Move Point Pick Size (pixels)". Try a smaller size like say
5 and it will mean you can pick smaller polygons since you will need to
be within 5 pixels of an edge/point to pick that instead.
2) Turn on just the polygon filter in the tool's context menu. "Right
Mouse Button -> Polygons". This way the tool will only select polygons.
The default is "Tweak All" which selects all the components.
For welding you can use the L hotkey to activate weld. If you hold the
key down it will work just like Alt. The idea about edges/polygons is a
good one too we didn't have time to implement something like this in
version 5. I'll add this request to our system fro consideration in a
future release of XSI.
Thanks.

Subject: Move point/component welding
Using the new move component tool and what a fantastic addition
it is for modeling! There are some quirks about it that I'm finding
however. First, the angle of incidence is really affecting the smart
highlighting for me. Points always get highlighted no matter how I have
my model turned in the viewport. For polys Im finding that viewing at a
glancing angle will basically make the move component tool not highlight
them. I have to orbit and look almost squarely for the poly to
highlight....and sometimes I want to move the polys from the sharp angle
I was viewing at. Edges aren't quite as bad as polys. Is anyone else
experiencing this and is there a preference somewheres to make the polys
highlight no matter how you look at the model?
Second, the Move Component tool has the weld point tool
do-hickey at the bottom. This only welds points....which is the same
functionality as the Move Point tool holding Alt. The move component
tool wont weld points by just holding alt.I have to click that little
weld icon. Why add one more click to the workflow? What would be best,
imo, is to have the move component tool weld both edges and points
depending on what I'm moving...and possibly even polys by doing a bridge
op instead of a weld....just by holding the alt button. No need to have
that 3rd little weld icon down there that only works on points and adds
another click. Is the reason for having the weld button due to the fact
you can hold alt and loop select/move with the tweak tool? Perhaps a
different key to hold for welding would make it easier? Is there a way
to set this up in the keyboard mapping...I've looked but didn't really
see a way right offhand....then again...I've not finished my 2nd coffee.
:P
