You don't really want 300 XSI users hitting the streets, looking for
work all at the same time, do you? ;)

I totally agree with you. I think Omation will increase the XSI
user community by a factor of 3 when Barnyard wraps up :-)

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective,
Software useage is often about critical mass, not quality -
consider Windows/Mac/Unix as one example. The current state with
3D applications is another good example. Maya is top dog right now
but the consensus seems to be that XSI is better. But if companies
want to change they're faced with not only cost but also the issue
of getting suitably proficient staff. But they're not going to get
that until there's enough work around to make it worthwhile
learning the software.
That said, my observation is still that XSI is still making
inroads and increasing bums on seats.
Who knows what's going to happen with Autodesk and Maya. There's
any number of good reasons for the buy but the real reason, the
real strategy and the ultimate outcome, only a few people at
Autodesk and possible Alias really know that.

hey SIGGRAPH is over, I've sobbered up by now!
Soft did have the best party this year :) Thanks Chinny.
The issue of amalgamation of the companies that create our 3d
apps etc.is <http://etc.is> probably quite healthy towards the
creation of next gen apps, but I'm a little worried
about smaller ones like XSI and Houdinis ability to stand up
to Max and Maya now. The arguement that Max and Maya are aging
technology won't fly for sales with the next gen past MAX
apperently already in the works before this deal. This deal is
very positive press against anyone considering leaving either
product I think.
I think though that XSI still has a great opportunity to leap
further forward with tools to build a pipeline on. I really
miss soft|3ds seperated scene out into models etc versus the
one scn file XSI uses, but perhaps an XML or other scn format
will help track and change assets and shot data thru a pipe
external to XSI. Leonard here suggested a neat idea of, as
well as having the traditional XSI save to scn file, having
XSI save directly into SQL.
Avid finally included behavior into XSI advanced, maybe next
gen Alienbrain will be included in XSI. If so, it should be
open and based on standards.
Pipeline tools integrated with other Avid editing products
would better enable tracking and manipulation of sequences.
Another area I think they could leverage out of Avid into XSI
would be more integration of 3D with a compositor and post
lighting, shading etc.
Maybe they don't need to buy anyone, just converge the
available tools better, but more proceduralism would
definitley help ;)
Looking forward to their response in the coming months.
Our experience with XSI on this production has been VERY
positive, so hoping for XSI to continue to do well.
