"all in a matter of seconds or minutes"
lol, try doing a HiDef job at 50i with every sequence being at least 30 seconds long and tell me it's a matter of seconds!
we NEED a proper wireframe SHADER solution for mental ray, so distributed rendering can be used....
anyone?

hey joey,
what about: http://www.phoenixtools.com/products/free_download.html there s the PT_showedges that will give you triangles...
if its a nurbs or you got it properly UVmapped you could use the grid texture.
but I would go with viewportcapture without hesitating. if you do white grid on black background you can use that as alpha. or do one pass for the wireframe do another for the alpha with different color settings. keep in mind you can do the viewport capture with the view as is, be it wireframe, constant, hiddenline,... you can get depth with fog, you can change the graphics card aliasing all the way up in the driver settings, or use the capture's aliasing which is much better but slow. you can get incidence with a little lighting trick. theres a ton of possibilities, all in a matter of seconds or minutes.

Thanks everyone, admittedly I had it in the back of my mind that I had seen these options in the Render Engine before but thought it might have been a figment of my imagination from a previous 3D life. So why doesn't Render Region offer this as an option while the formal Render can? When I looked for something earlier I couldnt produce anything via Preview, but that was because Preview was using Render Region's settings. Admittedly this isnt the best solution for my needs, I really need a wireframe shader for this but I guess it could work. Interesting about the Viewport Capture though. Was not yet aware of this feature.
Halfdan, how do I get the toon shader to render faces as separate object's? Tris aren't my prefferred option but that may do just fine.
Thanks
