I have another trick.

- select the polygons to bridge
- delete them
- select one border edge on each side of the bride
- modify > mesh > bridge boundary edges
- turn on "grow selection"
- increase the distance threshold

There's no setting, but there is a workaround which might be preferable to drawing the edges in by hand if your mesh is well aligned with the grid as in the image you posted.

1. Select the polys to bridge and randomize them a small amount in the direction of the bridge, e.g. Y in your image.
2. Bridge.
3. Select the top group ramdomized points and use the numeric Translate box to return them to their original height. Make sure that Transform > Collapse Points for Snapping/Absolute Translation is on.
4. Repeat for the bottom group.

I'll see if there's already a suggestion logged for the behaviour you want, and add one if not.

Yes, just tested it and you're right - I seem to have never noticed it in 4, maybe I had no coplanar meshes there... But now I have lots of them.
Argh. :-(
So there is no setting anywhere to change it to the "proper" behaviour?
Would be cool if this could be added in later versions.
For SubDs, the current ways of the bridge are not very practical...

Thanks,
