Hold yer horsie there.

As bad as the particle system might be, clipping planes at render time have nothing to do with XSI nor particles. mental ray tends to cull geometry based on clipping planes which messes up the volume object containing the renderable particle system. Nought we can do about that.

Clipping planes in mental ray are generally awful (they work differently depending on the rendering mode) and should be avoided at all costs.

RANT BEGIN

A snow field - very simple - takes 2 minutes to hack something together. It needs to be rendered in 3 layers, near mid and far for which I think camera clipping plane. But no, sorry - clipping planes and volume shaders  are a no go area and after dicking about for 3 hours trying to force it to work I Instead have to setup 3 emitters and 3 clouds as I cant just render the one cloud.

Don't get me wrong, Xsi is a great piece of kit - and way to go soft for v5 which is very good but the particle system is pants.

RANT END
