The idea was to have people associate colorful balls with great Sony TV Picture brilliance. And I'd say that CG Ballzzzzz are WAY more colorful. And unfortunately the balls did not do anything unexpected, which CG Balls could really do. I'm waiting for another TV company highjacking this concept and making something hillarious out of it. Like the Dancing Pepsi Bubbles which I liked a lot.

They probably had a good budget to start with, and probably someone of the advert company or the marketing division did a good job convincing the decision makers that spending this budget on live action would give a better result than faking it in CG.
From our point of view, as 3D professionals this is probably weird, as it does seem like a good case for CG, a nothing that any high end 3D house wouldnt be able to pull off.
it would be interesting to see a comparative budget for doing this live and doing it CG, might be revealing.
And does it look better in the end?
I'm not convinced of that seeing this spot.
