It was fun, i can tell you, this was done at The Mill.
Both Robert Kolbeins and me went to the shoot to supervise the CG which was
originally planned (believe me, we did quite a few simulations in XSI to
calculate the speed of the cameras to get the right effect -i actually did a
test with 4 million balls to predict how they could
look-) but fortunately the footage was so good, so incredible and so honest
with the concept that we all sat down and talking to them and basically the
whole idea was kept into the real world event instead of extending the
material by adding CG balls.
Both agency and client had in mind this as a real event from the very
begginning so IMO it was the best decision they could took.
>From the point of view of the ad i think is one of the most poetic
pieces of imagery i have ever seen and although i wish it was on my
show-reel as "cg work" the truth is that i want to think we did help on the
preproduction stage and shoot and at the end of the day, this looks much
better.
The balls were picked every lauch by an army of 30 runners that were paid to
collect balls, and believe me, it took more than 2 hours to collect every
launch!!! But hey, you could not believe how many kids approached them to
get a ball or two so it was very nice.
hope it helps
