This has always been the case as long as I can remember. Often you only have Software-OpenGL on the second monitor in dual screen mode which drags down everything massively. Since most graphics cards only have one OpenGL engine, this makes a lot of sense to me. Only a mode like horizontal span is able to work with one big unified screen area. This is the same for every 3D app and has nothing to do with XSI, but with the hardware from Nvidia and ATI etc.
The other thing you may want to look into with Nvidia cards is disabling the View Manager to speed up performance even more. Depending on the 3Dsoftware this can help quite a bit.
Cheers!

I have logged a support call that dual view actually causes serious performance problems. Frame rates when orbiting around small scenes in textured or shaded mode are about 6fps when they should be 30+. Switching to Horizontal Span mode fixes the issue.

Try setting your card in Dual View, and also try using the standard layouts that come with XSI. Also, watch out for any floating window or application that could be hanging around the location that the viewport capture is trying to center itself around.
