Speed doesn't look to bad either compared to the pixar system, considering how many computers they had chugging away on the system in this video... http://halbertram.com/interact.  I think Alan is on to something with the satellite stuff too.

Come to think of it, the direction I'd start looking if I was trying to do it is to look for (or sniff for) specs for satellite rendering. That is already listening on a port for a connection so it may be possible to start there and learn how to pass the shader and state details.

Hey Alan, if you're listening, could you elaborate a little more on what
you mentioned on Thursday regarding hooking into mental ray to use the
correct shading models as opposed to just approximating with Phong? Was
that a hopeful suggestion or is it actually possible?
