Windows is really pants at remote admin on even small networks but there are
a few things you can do to make life easier:

Pstools, as Patrick says, are indispensable.
Remember the windows backdoor, \\remote\c$ and \\remote\admin$ for direct
access to file roots. You can dump executables into one of these locations
and execute using psexec
Perl is great for knocking together admin tools but it's a pain having to
install perl and all your libraries so get the Activesate dev kit and use
Perlapp to build executables. These will run anywhere without installing
perl.
I've used VNC in the past but the new windows remote desktop is way, way
faster.
For monitoring render slaves activity use the performance monitor. You can
add remote processors to the graph then save it's layout to your desktop for
quick access.
