when the thread of using the lighting on the generator object to color fur
came up last week,
I thought of 2D fur for a microsecond. since its an output effect, it will
pick up the rendered color of the source.

overall it is pretty outdated,
but if you want very short fur and a huge amount of strands, (say
giraffeskin or so) it is still worth a look.
If you can bear to go with all the limitations of it that is.

viable nowadays. But perhaps I'm wrong and someone somewhere in his cave
still uses it.
