Never use the Image Clip view, the flipbook, or the fxtree to use .map file. They only generate an obsolete format of .map files, and that means no pyramid or anything fancy.   Always use Mental Image's imf_copy.
 
If you use the function in XSI that automatically generates .map for textures, it will in fact launches imf_copy to do this.
