First, if you get this error while XSI doesn't use a lot of memory, please send you repros to support, as it could be a bug. But in general:
A contiguous memory simply means that you are running out of memory. If you have big objects using big blocks of memory (like highly detailed textures), you will get this error sooner: big memory blocks are hard to find when a good part of the memory is used (you can think of searching for a 10X10 free spot in a parking lot when it is relatively crowded).
If you were not getting this issue in 4.2 and you are getting it in 5.0, then you were probably pretty close to get it in 4.2 too. When you are close to your limit of memory, adding anything to your scene can eventually make you hit this error (increasing subd level, adding an image clip, rendering...). Actually, for some things like big meshes and rendering, you should get it less in 5.0 (gigapoly core).
These are some of the possible solutions:
- Go to Win64 (with more than 2GB of memory of course)
- Start you Win32 with the 3GB switch
- Buy more memory (going over 2GB may not help in 32 bits), increase your swap space (going over 2GB may not help in 32 bits)
- Lower your memory size; here there's many ways, depends on the kind of scene you have (ex: reduce your OpenGL subdiv level, reduce image OpenGL settings, use ref models...)

Well, this error came up a lot less frequently in 4.2, so I doubt it's an OS issue.

Yep, here to. Mostly when I worked on the PC for a while and involve heavy textures. Can't wait till XSI5 is available for 64Bit Linux. Then I can finaly can that Microsoft OS garbage.
