That's what Set Branch Key does, ATL+K. These things are in the Animation Panel.
If you read the doc, when you use Keyable parameters you set your prereference in the Animation panel ("Save Key Command Mapping") to On All Keying Parameters and the the K key will key all keyable parameters one the selected object, and ALT+K all the keyable parameters on the branch (the rig).
You'll set your Animation Editor to show Keyable parameter, and other parts of the software like the TimeLine and the Keying Panel already show Keyable Parameters only by default.
Marking sets are essentially a previous attempt to make Keyable Parameters without really doing anything native in the software, so there was a number workflows and switches to build a system. With keyable parameters we can optimize the UI to do what's right with less setup. Scripting has also been enhanced in XSI 5.0 with commands that return collections of keyable parameters.
Basically, Keyable Parameters are the parameters that you work with, look at, and your case I guess export. It's how you tell the software that a parameter is important.
