If you're going for dual-core I'd definitely go with an AMD. Waiting for hardware virtualization technology is probably worthwhile too. It'll allow you to run windows and linux simulatenously on your machine. Talk about best of both worlds.

I might wait around for the yonah dells coming in feb (supposedly) but have been pretty taken by the AMD x2 desktop replacements, seems like they would last you a while and be able to handle anything:
