I think it's issue which representing volume bounding box. I didn't find way to get rid of this but in composition you can slightly adjust alpha channel to not see it.
Maybe if you could scale this box to adding some blobs to cover whole picture you even don't recognize something is there.

I'm getting what appears to be a reflection of a volume while rendering blobby particles.  The "artifact" grows and shrinks to cover the area where my particles appear.  When I turn of secondary rays, it goes away, but I lose my reflections of the particles themselves.  I was just curious if anyone else has run into this before.  I guess I could always fake-comp my reflections back in, but for the sake of learning and satisfying my urge of "need to know"...
