I haven't tried this, but it might be worth a spin - in your cloud material try disconnecting the shader from everything except the volume port.

I'm getting what appears to be a reflection of a volume while rendering blobby particles.  The "artifact" grows and shrinks to cover the area where my particles appear.  When I turn of secondary rays, it goes away, but I lose my reflections of the particles themselves.  I was just curious if anyone else has run into this before.  I guess I could always fake-comp my reflections back in, but for the sake of learning and satisfying my urge of "need to know"...
