I'd disagree here. We have moved part of our workstations from 32bit to
64bit due to massive memory problems during dotXSI exports. We have
started on the 64bit platform with 2GB of memory, which equaled our last
attempts with our 32bit machines, and the 64bit machines behave way
better when it comes to filling up the memory. Actually, on 64bit it
feels like having 2GB of memory, where the 32bit machines started
creating problems at a point of ~1,5 GB memory usage. To me it looks
like MS improved a couple of things for the 64bit OS in the area of
memory fragmentation...
Though I certainly agree on all the aforementioned issues of missing
64bit drivers and plugins, which is the current price you pay for the
new OS' benefits... (took me hours to get that printer working... ;) )
My $0.02, cheers!

One point you should consider, although it's been re-iterated over
many times, is what specs the boxes will have.
64bit HW platforms are ready to use and great to work with (an AMDX2
is a joy to work on regardless of the OS), but with anything less then
4 gigs of ram you don't really need the OS part to be 64bit, there
would be little (arguably none at all) benefit in a 64bit OS on a box
with 2 GB.
Unless you plan on superspeccing your boxes right away, especially in
the ram department, you can easily start the migration of the HW
platform, and reap the benefits of fast CPUs (speed will not change
percievably, if at all, when you move to 64bit OS), and stick to a
32bit OS until waters are calmers, and then just boost the ram and the
OS sometime at the end of the year, when the state of things will be
more 64bit friendly.

Thanks Kim!
I was just asking because I use external shaders
in almost every work I do... It is just a big step back
to invest now in a 64-bit machine, may be it is better to wait
a while... are there many people already using XSI 64?
Best regards
Filipe

although 32 bit applications will usually run on 64 bit XSI had
been compiled for 64 bit and needs for any dlls to also be
compiled for 32 bit. They're gradually catching up but there's
still a good few out there that haven't been rebuilt. Not sure if
the dirtmap shader is one of them but it's possible.
Have you tried XSI's new ambient occlusion shader instead?

Hello!
Will external shaders like Dirtmap
work on XSI 64 platform or are they incompatible
with the 64 bit system?
Thanks in advance.
