For clicking outside I prefer having it set to pre-3.5 (or SI3D) moving mode
for the reasons mentioned by Kim, besides sometimes using manipulators can
be a bit annoying and this is a quick way to go back to the old ways.
Besides something similar has been discussed on xsi-blog a while back about
a pretty cool example Andrea Interguglielmi showed there:
http://www.xsi-blog.com/?p=55 don't know if that ever went anywhere beyond
that discussion. Anyone?

You might also find it useful to set Preferences -> Tools -> Transform ->
Click Outside Manipulator to the Select Tool.

In this mode when you click outside the manipulator it automatically
activates the selection tool so you can select a different object without
leaving the transform tool.

If you combined this with TransformSetup properties on different objects as
suggested below you would have a pretty efficient workflow.

I see, so the "transform setup" can be close to this, with a per object
transform choice, only need to slap object selection mode betwwen each
manipulation.
