This was a big problem to our animators trying to preview their animations,
but since Brent pointed out the Fast Playback system they've had no
complaints.

Agreed, I don't have quicktime installed on this box (quicktime alternate
however) and the codec button does just fine. Most likely it's a codec
problem, not a soft problem.
Since the codecs installed are a variable out of softimage's control, then
its hardly something they can fix other than hard coding it so you cant
render to movie formats.

I don't think it's the button that is the problem. A lot of the times
pressing "codec" will crash XSI because of Quicktime. Wierd I know....
But after uninstalling QT there was never any problems.
And, these days I never make a capture to a movie format any more, and if I
do I use the standard codec that is chosen by XSI (aka "never touch that
button")
