mike,

I have similar likes and dislikes with the mixer. I
don't think however that you want to build a global
clip every time you start animating at least not a
regular clip.
 i think what is really needed is a new clip type. I
would like to see a type of empty clip that would
dynamically populate itself with the fcurves of any
parameter that are being transitioned or mixed against
it.  In this way you could create a link to the world
outside of clips but still interact with the mixer. 
then if you decide you could transform this dynamic
clip into a normal one in similar fashion to the
current method.
 If you do something similar to this plus make it far
easier to edit animation already within clips then the
mixer might start to realize its potential.
 Hopefully soft will update the mixer soon.
