Have you try Photoshop SGI Format plugin 1.2.0 from
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/ ?? I did a quick try, support 16 bit
and alpha (read n write). Still in beta testing though.

If you need an interactive solution, the FXTree works fine, but command
line tools are probably your best option if you need a quick
conversion. imf_copy supplied with mental ray, or imgconv supplied with
XSI should do the trick. I'd lean towards imf_copy.
