3D Scanning/Digitizing services?

Subject : 3D Scanning/Digitizing services?

Has anyone had any experience getting real objects scanned? Someone dropped off a statue for us to "scan into 3D" for them. I wonder if the scanning prices are comparable to the time it would take for me to model the thing from scratch?
