Ok, I agree... I see your point, amplitude is the bad choice of word but
still, the bleeding gives the illusion of a change of amplitude even if it's
not that... that's what normal maps do, they fake a displacement without
displacing anything. So amplitude may be the wrong choice of word for the
implementation but to the user, that's the effect they see. Anyway, there's
no point in arguing about a bad choice of word here. D3 called his parameter
"influence" anyway.

I remember that much, but that's a blending, not an amplitude :)
you couldn't take the normal map and make it look like if suddenly the
object had a different thickness of the bump.
