I´m not sure how close you´ll see them, the below worked
great for me in a not too close up shot (two shelfs full frame)
I did a 2k square texturemap, filled it with 75% backs and
20% sides the last 5% where tops (e.g. where you see pages).
I made sure that there´d always be a couple of backs with
the same height next to each other, e.g. I built blocks.
After getting the tonal ranges to look good together, I did
a second one, replacing individual backs and shifting hues
on others. The images look alot like containers stacked
on a cargoship.
When that was done, I used the ATI BumpNormalmapgenerator
to generate a pseudo normalmap and used that to add a slight
amount of bump (helps alot in shattering any specular and lights).
The tedious but somewhat fun part was to then shift UV groups
of bookbacks across the texture(s) and create a somewhat
believable arrangement of books in a shelf. Obviously, I split
back and side UV´s recycling the sidetexturebits more often.
Cheers
tim
P.S: I´d provide a sampletexture but the project isn´t released yet.
May even take a couple of months more. (Boy, am I´m eager to see
my only bit of work from last year :)

Subject: Creating a Library - lots of books
Hello everybody,
I will shortly have to create a library, probably filled with books.
Does anybody have an idea as to how to get the books done properly?
I'm not worried about the models but texturing a large amount of
books could be quite challenging. Are there any tricks I could use?
Thanks,
Chris
