dunno if anyone's interested but this is something I've been messing around with. Sorry, it's a 40 meg and odd avi.

Do most of you use XSI Batch or Batch Universal for your BatchServe farms? We have a couple of BatchUni.'s and two Advance seats. I'm looking into expanding and was thinking of going the XSI Batch route. It's very rare that I render mi2 files. Anyone know the cost on the Batch lics? I think the Universal are around $1000 and about $500/year for maintenence. How does that compare to Batch?

Also, when using other render managers(Royal Render or something like that), is there any way to get an more cpus on the job that you can with BatchServe? I wondered if there was any clever license juggling or anything like that?

You can purchase standalone Mental Ray licenses (32 or 64 bit) from Soft
with out having to buy a seat of XSI.

Wait, standalone Mental Ray?  My understanding is you need to have the
ability to run an XSI session of some sort to do the standard rendering
option in BatchServe.  So standalone Mental Ray wouldn't work (although
I don't think you can buy standalone Mental Ray from Soft without also
buying an XSI seat of some sort).  Basically, the machine just needs to
be able to launch the xsibatch command, which is possible with anything
you can buy with XSI in the name (unless foundation doesn't include it
-- you'd need to check) including XSIBatch and XSIBatch Universal.
XSIBatch exists so that Softimage can sell a non-interactive
rendering/scripting only version of XSI for a discounted price, making
renderfarms more affordable.  And XSI Batch Universal exists so that
people can render with mental ray directly if they want to, using the
ray3 executable, which is just raw mental ray and has nothing to do with
XSI (other than a fond friendship).  With Batch Universal, you could
render mi2 files coming out of Maya or Max or vi or whatever.
Personally, I've never even tried the mi2 rendering option in
BatchServe.  I'd actually be sort of surprised if anyone has.  That's
not to say that standalone Mental Ray isn't useful, but unless you have
a very well-designed, automated mi2 pipeline in place, and really know
what you're doing, it's likely to be just a lot of extra steps for no
real benefit.

Oh, and yes, BatchServe is just the queue manager.  The word "Batch"
gets tossed around a lot -- it's definitely confusing.
