I recommend downloading the trial (yes 30 days free btw) and exporting as fbx.

The whole Max format thing is a little wack imo.

Yeah, you need Polytrans and Max to do this.  Just download a trial version of Max, its fully functional for 30 days I believe.  Friggin Autodesk keeps a firm grip on there file format for some reason.
