On this scene, my problem seemed to be linked to a visibility animation in conjunction with motion blur. I discarded the visibility and was able to use a zero scale instead. I know that approach won't work for a lot of scenes but it was a suitable workaround in my case. I have had some scenes randomly drop objects in the render even when I wasn't animating the visibility. Weird.

The objects disappear in the region as well. I'm not doing a network render but am doing satellite - though when I commented out the render targets the problem was still there.

The uvw trick did work with satellite.

just to make sure, when you render a preview or region the objects
show up, right? at least thats what its doing here.
your uvw trick, does it work with network rendering? in my case the
objects have uvw's and bitmaps mapped.
