I'm not extremely aware of the workings of references in Maya, but in
XSI, references are not exactly meant or intended to be added layers
of edits.

I haven´t used references really neither in Maya nor in XSI, mostly because I´d usually model seperate snippets but don´t do much animation or heavy scenes, that´s why I need to poke you with questions...

Btw, one question: why do you need to *merge* everything? Any reason
specifically? I'd be very interested in your workflow.

Keep in mind what I do is not top of the line stuff. More or less it´s just trying to get along. I switched to XSI for modeling, have characteranimation and proxysets in Maya and want to merge the plotted animation with the highrezset(s) for rendering in XSI. The plotted animation gets pretty heavy to work with, but I still gain a speedimprovement when setting up shading and layers in XSI.

Due to the layout of the indoorsets and the way light is shed it would be
favourable to have everything in one scene and knock out as many layers
as possible from that. Adjustmentlayers for shadows, reflections and rims.

Basically, it´s just a guy on a stretcher, reflecting in the sourrounding and
being lit by rotating volumetric lights casting the key lights (with shards).

Althought it´s not advisable I currently model the various elements in one
scene, trying to sync everything to the scale of the character, his proportions.

To get an idea of the mood, I´ll also do draft lit renderings now and then
and had hoped I could swap out finished props with references, refine
shading once in a while and simply use the latest version of a shader for
each prop (by importing a preset) when assembling the masterscene to
be broken up into shots (and layers). I´ll skip referencing now until later.

I play around alot with light, poking around until I like the picture or mood,
even thought it may not add to the output directly - it helps me grasping XSI.

P.S: As I said, it´s not quite top-notch yet...

I expect to add detail based on individual shots, checked my workflow
again and decided that I will better have one (backround)scene including
everything (~35 MB data), render the camera draft and do the animations
with the backround as rotoscopeplate(s), when satisfied, merge everything
and break it up into layers for rendering. This way I can also mix Maya and
XSI renderings in progress easily and save the I/O overhead and diskspace.

Hi Tim,

I'm not extremely aware of the workings of references in Maya, but in
XSI, references are not exactly meant or intended to be added layers
of edits. Most of references models attributes are locked, which means
you can only modify them through overrides and similar forced
inheritance device. As far as my experience goes, it is tricky to
modify heavily a reference model. Instead you are better to export the
reference model with the modifications in it.

Btw, one question: why do you need to *merge* everything? Any reason
specifically? I'd be very interested in your workflow.

Thanks
Bernard
