if IPs resolve to the correct box, but the name doesn't, then you have a definite problem that you should address.
static IP addressing is a major pain in the arse to manage, and dynamic IP addressing will, ,at some point, rework the IP leasing and change the IP on a box, voiding anything statically linked the way you're doing it.

P.S.
don't underestimate a server room, racks of 1U boxes NEED air conditioning.

Stefan, thanks again. I did just that, Kim did offer that advice too.
Although I found some XP systems required the use of the IP address rather than the name
to access. Like you said, I don't have a security issue since I am a small outfit but I do have
a noise problem with all these 1U running. I need a server room.

it's probably how you have setup your samba shares. I've found in most
cases that the graphical setups (when using a GUI to make the samba
shares) doens't always make the proper adjustements.
One general tip is to have the same login and password for all your
machines. This will make the samba share a lot easier to setup. And
since you are a small company you don't really need to worry about
security amongs users or employees :)

I recommend you read these pages:
http://linuxhelp.homeunix.com/cgi-bin/rblh/index.rb?handler=articles&article=samba
http://www.engr.colostate.edu/~reinholz/freebsd/samba.html

It will help you to setup a proper samba share.
