Of course there are lot of other ways to do this kind of thing ( incidence, flat light, toon etc...).
If you don't freeze objects rotation it will give wrong result. If you know how to solve it in the render tree tell me !

Any time. You have to remember that the grad has basically monochromed the
whole shot, but if you want full colour control then split the rgb out of
the stereo - the stereo is just a cheap way to source the image - feed into
3 grads and recombine. You can get some nice effects.

It originally came from an idea where I wanted to colour correct rendered
output into non-linear space for movies, using a LUT node.
